Kjerstin Gruys, a 29-year-old PhD student in sociology, has mastered the art of avoiding her own reflection. For months, her daily schedule began with the typical teeth brushing, but a curtain covered the bathroom mirror. She inserted her contact lenses and applied her makeup by touch, not sight. Driving to work required glances in the rear- and side-view mirrors, but Gruys avoided peeking at her own image. It was part of a unique experiment that Gruys hopes will help boost her own self-esteem and inspire others to stop focusing on external perfection. In her blog ;Mirror, Mirror Off the Wall;, she documents her yearlong effort to live mirror-free. The project had its roots in Gruys#39; struggles with body image and her experience overcoming an eating disorder. In high school, Gruys said, she had insecurities about her appearance and suffered from anorexia. Gruys launched her no-mirrors project in March 2010, while planning her wedding to then fiancé Michael Ackermann. Wedding dress shopping was not the pleasure-filled experience that she had expected. But instead, Gruys says dress shopping was a source of stress. ;I saw myself in the mirror and was being critical,; she says. ;I thought, well, maybe I should lose a little weight before the wedding, always a bad thing to focus on when you have a history of an eating disorder.” Then Gruys a passage in the book ;Birth of Venus,; describing an order of nuns in Renaissance Italy who had severe restrictions against vanity. ;They didn#39;t have mirrors in their lives. They were forbidden to look at each other when undressing. They were actually forbidden to look at themselves while they undressed.;之后,格鲁伊斯在《维纳斯的诞生》一书中读到了一段文章,文中描述了在文艺复兴时期的意大利,为了严格遏制虚荣心理而让修女遵循的一条规定:“她们的生活中没有镜子。 For the first time in her life, Gruys said she was tempted to follow suit. In the beginning of her mirror-free lifestyle, Gruys admits there were a few maintenance mishaps. ;The first month of the project ...when I was walking out the door...it was maybe a 50-50 shot that I had mascara on my nose.;“在计划实施的第一个月…… But quickly, she learned to adapt. Gruys says she trained herself to avoid eye contact with her own image in windows and other reflective surfaces, trusted friends to tell her what looks good instead of relying on the mirror in dressing rooms. And she put complete faith in her hair stylist. To the surprise of many, Kjerstin says the wedding day was actually one of the easiest days to navigate mirror-free. ;I#39;m getting my focus back to thinking about the real meaning of the day, which isn#39;t how I look but marrying the love of my life,; she said. Tenants living in east London are facing eviction from their homes with hardly any notice by landlords wanting to cash in on the Olympics. Housing and homelessness charity Shelter has seen numerous cases of families being forced to seek last minute accommodation after being evicted by their landlords. In some cases, the tenants are even being evicted illegally by rogue landlords who instead want to use their properties for short-terms lets at inflated rental prices during the London games. Many homes near the Olympic grounds are being let for 20 times the usual rental price during the games. Campbell Robb, Chief Executive at Shelter, said: #39;Londoners living in the Olympic boroughs are aly suffering from increasingly unaffordable rents, a lack of stability and a minority of rogue landlords who exploit the high demand for homes in the capital.“庇护所”的执行长坎贝尔-罗伯说:“居住在奥运场馆附近的伦敦人已经承受了飞涨的房租,生活缺乏稳定,还有少数粗暴的房东利用伦敦的住房高需求谋利。”;Increasingly we are seeing signs that the Olympics are exacerbating these problems, with some landlords looking to evict tenants and re-let their homes to Olympic visitors, without any guarantee that they will be filled.;“如今我们越来越多地看到,奥运会正在加剧这些问题。 ;But the reality is that we are caught in the grip of a housing crisis that#39;s been decades in the making. Unless the Government starts to prioritise housing and invest in the decent, secure and affordable homes that London and the rest of the country desperately needs, these problems are not going to go away.;“但现实情况是我们正身处持续了几十年的住房危机中。 One tenant Ninna Thorhuge told the B she had been given just two weeks notice by her landlord that she had to move out. She told the TV station: #39;Everything is done in the name of the Olympics. In my mind it#39;s overrated. ;I know it may be good for London but a lot of Londoners who live here get hurt by it.;“我知道承办奥运对伦敦可能有好处,但很多住在这里的伦敦人却受到了伤害。”Housing Minister Grant Shapps told the B: ;Landlords should be under no doubt that it is a criminal offence for them to evict a tenant without giving proper notice, and that anyone found guilty of doing this - or of harassing a tenant - could lead to a custodial sentence of up to two years.;英国住房事务大臣格兰特#8226;沙普斯告诉B:“房东们必须清楚,在没有提前通知租户的情况下就将其赶走,这是违法的,任何这样做的人,或者骚扰租客的人都将面临最长两年的监禁。”The National Landlords Association also condemned the practice - warning landlords it is often more beneficial to have good, long-term tenants in their property. I am constantly ing thoughtful opinion pieces urging people to turn off their electronic devices and retake control of their lives. Let your email pile up. Deep-six all social media. Turn off your phone. Stop tweeting. Cut off the outside world, get in touch with your inner self, release your mind from all that tension. Just chill. True, these Don#39;t Worry, Be Happy suggestions are almost always issued by out-of-the-loop baby boomers who do not text, are not on Facebook, hate email and would never dream of owning a smartphone. But just because a baby boomer suggests something doesn#39;t automatically mean it is wrong. And since I am a baby boomer, and since I deeply resent the all-pervasive intrusion of electronic media into my life, I have started to take these suggestions to heart. Last week, my wife and I went to the Connecticut shore for a brief vacation, and before I left I turned off my phone and stuffed my laptop in the closet. For the next four days I would refrain from ing my email, checking my phone messages or eyeballing any incoming texts. (I am not on Facebook, because I d to find out what my kids are up to in Virginia Beach.) For the next four days, I would seal myself off from the world. The initial results were fantastic. I enjoyed every second on the beach, which gave me time to clear my head and four books and wax philosophical about the meaning of life. By the time our sojourn was over, I felt relaxed and refreshed, y to go home and take on the world. Abstaining from electronic interfacing had eased the tension in my neck, packed up all my cares and woes, turned me into a new man. The Luddites were right: Life was not only possible, but was actually better, without email, smartphones, texts. The whole experience made me realize how foolish I was to succumb to the tyranny of technology. iStock短信没有及时查看会有什么样的后果? Then things turned sour. When I got back home Sunday night I found out that the police had been trying to reach me all day Saturday because someone had broken into my home and stolen my car. The thieves stole all my art, my wife#39;s jewelry, two priceless Martin guitars and most of my Los Lobos CDs. It took hours for the cops to get the alarm system turned off because nobody knew the code. The neighbors were really steamed. That wasn#39;t all. One of my oldest friends emailed from London to say that he was stopping by New York on his way home to Australia but would only be in town Sunday afternoon. I hadn#39;t seen him since 1989. But I wasn#39;t checking my email so I never found out that he was in town till I got home Sunday evening. By that time he was gone. Maybe I#39;ll catch up with him on his next visit in 2035. My broker left a phone message Thursday morning saying that Apple was going to win its lawsuit over Samsung on Friday, so I could make a killing by going long on Apple and shorting Samsung. Particularly if I tapped into the home-equity loan and leveraged up. But I had to do it right away or miss out on the chance of a lifetime. Unfortunately, I had my phone shut off. My dreams of retiring to Aix-en-Provence are gone. Now I#39;ll have to retire to Aix-en-Poughkeepsie. Friday afternoon, a local radio station emailed that I had won 16 VIP tickets to see Springsteen in September. Plus backstage passes. But I had to respond within 24 hours. No dice. Running through my remaining texts, phone messages and emails, I found out that I had been asked to appear on #39;The Tonight Show#39; but had to fly out Friday morning, and had been invited to attend a fantasy rock #39;n#39; roll camp hosted by Prince, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, but needed to confirm my attendance within 12 hours. Last but not least, Prince Harry texted over the weekend to invite me and my wife to a party in Manhattan. Somehow, the royal family found out that my wife was a British C.P.A., and Prince Harry was having a costume party where everybody had to dress up as a British expat C.P.A. Pippa was going to be there, too, as she had once considered a career in accountancy. But I wasn#39;t checking texts or emails or phone messages while I was on vacation, because I was trying to relax, unwind, get in touch with my inner self. Now I am in touch with my inner self. And my inner self is an idiot.
